Most of people have heard of the big five. This phrase was used big game hunters and it does not refer to the biggest animals in Africa! It rather refers to what the hunters decided were the five most dangerous or difficult animals in Africa to hunt on foot.
Most South Africans could probably rattle off most of them, since they currently appear the South African bank notes (which might be replaced in the near future). But for our foreign students – here is the big five: the Cape buffalo, the African elephant, the leopard, the lion and the Rhinoceros.
These are still the animals most sought after by visitors to South Africa. But if you’re coming to South Africa, or about to go on a drive or walk in nature: how about trying to find the Little Five, Shy Five, Impossible Five and the Ugly Five?
